The naturalization process involves several steps, from determining eligibility to taking the Oath of Allegiance.

Below is a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Before applying for U.S. citizenship, ensure you meet the following basic requirements:

• Be at least 18 years old

• Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)

• Have continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S.

• Demonstrate good moral character

• Have basic proficiency in English and knowledge of U.S. history/government

• Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.

 

Step 2: Prepare and Submit Form N-400

• Complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, online or by mail

• Gather supporting documents (e.g., green card, tax records, travel history)

• Pay the filing fee unless eligible for a fee waiver

Step 3: Attend Biometrics Appointment

• Provide fingerprints, photograph, and signature

• Undergo background and security checks

📢 Biometrics appointment notice will be sent with date, time, and location

 

Step 4: Complete the Naturalization Interview & Citizenship Test

• USCIS will schedule an interview at your nearest USCIS office

Step 5: Receive a Decision from USCIS

After the interview, USCIS will provide one of three decisions:

✔ Approval – Your application is approved, and you’ll receive an oath ceremony notice​

❌ Denial – Your application is denied (you may appeal or reapply)

⏳ Continuation – USCIS requests additional documents or a retest

 

Step 6: Take the Oath of Allegiance & Become a U.S. Citizen

If approved, USCIS will schedule you for a naturalization ceremony where you will:

• Take the Oath of Allegiance

• Receive your Certificate of Naturalization

• Officially become a U.S. citizen 

 

After Naturalization, you can:
✔ Apply for a U.S. passport
✔ Register to vote
✔ Sponsor family members for green cards
✔ Enjoy full U.S. citizen rights and responsibilities
